I recently was at a conference where one statement made a huge impact in my life. We were talking about one’s purpose in life – and what do you do when the going gets tough? Specifically –are you playing small in your life? So – are you?
I was successful during my time in the corporate world – yet when I reflect back– I was not showing up for myself. I was playing small. You see I thought that if I had a degree of success – that was all that mattered. There were times during my career where I didn’t go after the promotion or speak up for myself. I worked in an industry that was heavily tilted toward men. I realize now that I was letting my paradigm control my actions. All results are a reflection of your beliefs.
I was comfortable (and successful by income standards) and I reasoned with myself that I didn’t need to apply for the management role. I was staying small because I didn’t believe that I deserved to be in the same place as some of my colleagues. I allowed my past circumstances cloud what I believed of myself. Have you ever done the same? Have you ever doubted that you belonged in a career, earned the praise, or income received? I let the fact that I “earned” a great income stand in place of my purpose. I stayed in my comfort zone, no need to take chances.
Now, when I am coaching my clients, I know it is as simple as making one decision at a time. Anyone can decide today to make that decision and to do whatever it takes. Ask yourself – are you willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill your purpose? DO you know, at a deep level, what your purpose is? Have you listened to your inner voice?
I ignored my inner voice for a long time. I can list the excuses I gave myself, but I’m sure if you are doing the same that you know exactly what the voice in your head is saying. The secret is within you, your job is to discover what your reason is for being here and then focus on where you are going and nothing else. I am glad I have discovered my purpose; I wish I had listened earlier. But I’m glad that I finally bet on myself and I can’t wait to see how I can help others do the same.
One step at a time. Show up for yourself. Play BIG.
