Did you wake up this morning excited that it was the first day of the week? And if not, why not? On Sunday night I am listing the few things that I need to focus on Monday to get the week started. I love the work I get to do – because I get to change other people’s lives. I’m always wishing I had more hours in the day because I have multiple areas I can focus on. I get energized as the week goes on and always curious who I am going to meet.
What about you? Do you love your work? I hope so, because there are so many positives for all of us that do the work we love. From an article, “7 Surprising Benefits of Doing Work You Love”, the summary is impactful. Here are the 7 areas:
- Your Health will improve
- Your relationships will improve
- You’ll have more energy
- Your confidence will improve
- You’ll enjoy life more
- You’ll want to continue learning and growing (in your profession)
- Your motivation will soar
I don’t know about you, but I want ALL of those benefits! What a fantastic life that will be – how can you get to the [place of loving your work?
When I started to take inventory of my career, I realized that I love helping people. For years I did that specifically in the financial service world. I slowly started to understand the progression that I was moving towards. I had worked for the big asset management companies, but my clients were the advisors. I wanted to get closer to the clients, so I became a planner and advisor. All the while working at places where we were building and testing new models. I realized I like the building process and wanted to have a bigger impact than I was currently with my clients.
You should always be asking yourself questions about you, your job, your company – and ultimately your goal. I already knew that I love work and retiring away from a career was not something I wanted as an end goal. I wanted a role that would energize me and would look forward to every day – today and 10-20 years from now. I found my purpose in helping others achieve their dreams, but it involved making a change, some would say taking a huge risk – but with all success there is risk and fear along the way.
If you love your work – fantastic, but if you are just counting the years to retirement or change – I know there is better. You can start slow, but start is the key. There are so many avenues that you can start with – books, podcasts, YouTube, articles – something is out there that will help you. But not taking a small step means that tomorrow, the next day, the next week and month will all be a repeat of today. Embrace life, be bold.
